Default Audio in Debian

Today i install xmss so i can play some music and i got nothing so i know most likey that i dont have the sound set-up in debian. I have normal sound for system programs and stuff. But for music i have nothing.

Type alsaconfig in the term and see if you get anywhere...I don't know if Debian uses alsa, but that might be the problem.

But first, you may have to apt-get install alsa

Make sure that Arts is off and that OSS support is enabled.

Ok i installed alsa, configured it which seemed to not work. I got in contact with Macdude here we both tried to work it out but nothing. He shh my computer gotin and tried many thing that i dont know for sure on . And still nothing no sound error keeps popping up sayig there no sound card. I have a onboard sound." [AO OSS] audio_setup: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: No such device
alsa-init: no soundcards found " . And such he was no successful on fixing it so i dont know what to try or do here any idea's ?

Install alsa-utils then run alsaconf, if that doesn't work you either have an unsupported soundchip or you have a hardware problem.

To reply to popey, when I was working with him via SSH, I installed alsa-base AND alsa-utils, but it still didn't work...

yea i jsut reinstalled Debian and now it works.

Too late, I know

But did you try going into the preferences of xmms and changing the output driver to alsa, or any of the others.

If you were getting sound from other programs through the speakers and not the system speaker (on the chassis) then the hard part was done
