Default ATTN: All Linux guru's

I've finally decided to take the plunge and use Ubuntu.

I've used YDL on my PS3 and had that set-up great, until I sold it.

I got Windows Vista for my gaming rig (DX10!)and after having to re-install it three times in the past two months, I'm sick of it and am ready to dual boot Linux to use on a daily basis. I will only be using Vista for video games.

I have Vista on my 74gig raptor. I'l be putting Ubuntu 7.04 on a 320gig HDD on a 80gig partition. I've partitioned the rest for media files. I'm pretty excited with my set-up.

I'd like to find a program that's good for encoding .vob's to h.264. I'd also like to find a program that would let me sync my Ipod up with my computer to add songs to it.

Are any of you aware of any software that would let me do that stuff?

Any help would be much appreciated. Expect a good amount of questions from me haha.

I believe this is what you're looking for: H264enc

As for syncing your iPod and playing music this is what I use: Banshee

Try sourceforge.net as well for Linux programs. There are so many sites supporting Linux now that it's next to impossible not to find something you're looking for. I have openSuSE running on my comp and I absolutely love it. So much better than Windows once you learn how to use it.

Hope that helps you get started.

It did, thank you very much for your input.

I got Ubuntu 7.04 all set up and running, installed the Nvidia driver (thanks to Envy, which is an awesome program), and I'm currently working on setting up Beryl.

I've also got VLC installed.

So far, I am loving Ubuntu. I'd love to use that exclusively. I am dual booting though, gotta keep Vista for games unforuntaly! Haha.

I will look into Quake Wars once it's released for Linux though.

Glad to see that you're liking Linux. A lot of Windows users are put off by it because they're not used to it.

You should try out Amarok if you're looking for a great media player.

Oh yes, I'm enjoying it quite abit.

I just became fed up with Vista. Having to get it just for Direct X10 (I'm a PC gamer and console gamer, and if you've seen anything DX10, you know why I'd want it), is a joke to me, and I've had bad experience with it software wise. I've had windows explorer crash on me multiple times, i've had programs not be able to get un-installed, the disk getting fragmented all the time, it prompting me all the time if i want to run a program or not. Oh, and I've re-installed Vista on my gaming rig three times in the past couple months.

So after all that, even though I've grown up on Windows (literally, i got for my first family computer when I was in the 5th grade and it had Windows 98 on it), so I've became quite used to it.

But, I've decided to give Linux a shot. Sure, you have to know your way around it somewhat, but I love the fact that it's open source, it boots up fast and shuts down fast, the softwards great, and so far I've been very impressed by the community.

I'll check out that Amarok sometime soon. I'm still trying to get Beryl set up how I want it, and it's taking awhile. I'm tempted to wait until the next Ubuntu update comes out, but we'll see.

Here you can find a tutorial how to install Beryl in ubuntu. This page has also a lot of other tutorials that are very handy.

Thanks fainha. I already installed Beryl.

I'm just having difficulty setting it up with keys and getting the effects to work. I was trying to load pre-configure ones, but that's not working to wel for me haha. For some reason I click on "Import" and even though I have a legit Beryl file, it won't import, nothing happends.

I'll check ou that site about Beryl to see if anyhing is mentioned on there about it.
