OK i've just installed ubuntu on a spare PC, I've set it up to WOL and accept remote connections via xdmcp, i'm posting from an xdmcp connection on my Laptop right now.

My question is basically is there anything I need to know straight off? is ubuntu secure off the bat?
I know a fair bit about windows and I know that to get it secure there is a heck of a lot of advanced configuration involved, i'm concerned that I know nothing about linux as a system (i know a little bash). I don't even know if there is a firewall, or if its on by default or how to configure it etc...

Any tips welcome.

p.s. are there any special considerations for using xdmcp?

p.p.s I'm using 7.04 btw but i'll probably update to 7.10 when the download speeds are reasonable again.
