when you ran alsamixer did you see any of the volume levels have "MM" at the bottom of the level bars, that means its muted, hit "m" to unmute it

chances are pretty good something is muted that isnt supposed to be, you should have other mixers available too, you can try rexima or aumix as well, either will run from the command line

I tested the sound in the Control Center and it worked fine. I turned it off again though, like you said.
