Amd64

I lent a ubuntu 7.04 live cd to a mate to troubleshoot his PC but he says it won't boot, he has a dual opteron system, does the ordinary 7.04 cd work on the AMD64 architecture?

Honestly i dont know. I do know that they have Specific CD's for the 64Bit architecture. Maybe one of those will work better for him?

Need more information than just this..

What does he mean it doesn't boot? Won't load windows or won't POST, bland screen or stuck at POST Screen?..

no, windows works but he has problems with his dvd drives, I suggested he ruled out a hardware problem with either the drives or the ide controller by booting the linux cd I gave him a while back (ubuntu 7.04) and seeing if the drives are ok under linux.
When he trys to boot the live cd it just chucks him to a prompt with some errors.

So really this could confirm that he is having errors with his drives. If it wont boot a live CD. Maybe?

yeah perhaps thats why I was wondering if the problem might just be that the live cd I gave him doesn't run on AMD64 - if it does run on AMD64 then I think its likely a hardware problem.

I have the ubuntu x64 CD an it just plain refuses to install on my desktop, try using another live CD based oh ReadHat such as Mandriver.

32 bit versions should still run fine on AMD64/EMT64 hardware. i'm thinking this just confirms that the drives/controller are damaged.
