Sounds like an issue with your bootloader...I remember this happening to me a while ago, but I can't remember what I did to fix it. You using Grub or Lilo?

Sounds like a corrupt partition table/MBR. Use a zero fill utility (from harddrive manufacturer) to completely erase everything and start again. Problems like this are usually the result of incompatable disk tools using different disk geometry.

******MIT!!! Are you serious? Zero filling takes so **** long, that is such a *****.

Qiran, I'm not using two operating systems so I opted to not use a bootloader (LILO) think thats my problem? I reinstalled, reformatted too, and am still getting this error.

In that case, I don't see why it would be your problem...unfortunately, it looks like Popey is right here...you may have to do a zero fill...

Why do you mention LILO by the way?

I never boot Linux without a bootloader, even though I've only got one operating systsem (Gentoo Linux) on my machine, because whenever I upgrade the kernel it's nice to be able to quickly switch back to the old one at first if something isn't configured/working properly.

This is my first time installing linux, and my frist time touching Linux. So as you can prolly assume, it is all very confusing. I consider myself to be extremelly good with computers, but Linux is a whole new thing to me. Like I've been told, I have to unlearn computers and start over again with Linux.

I meantioned LILO because i'm using Slackware and thats the only bootloader it gave me the option of installing. I thought it may be pertinent to know that, I guess I was wrong.

I just got me a zero fill utility, and I'm doing it right now, so I will report back when I install Linux again and run into another problem.

Thanks!

I'm pretty sure that even if Linux is the only OS on the disk you still need a bootloader.

It would seem that Linux doesn't like you all that much.

You need lilo to boot slackware, I'd suggest you install it to your MBR when given the option.
If you're having problems creating partitions you could use partition magic first and go straight to slackware setup. Another popular method is to use a mandrake install disk and hit reset after the partitioning part.
Good luck
