I built a new rig... 9600 GT 512mb 256bit video card. Ubuntu Hardy Heron 8.04 64 bit.

I installed the simple + advanced compiz manager, yet I can't get my appearance settings to stick on custom. They revert right back to normal.

There's no restricted driver available for my graphics card, so I used Envy-GTK to install the latest one. But now Compiz is having issues with it, as I stated above.

On the Nvidia site, I downloaded the latest driver via tarball and ran their commands to install it, but naturally, it bombarded me with errors about x-server already running.

So, I need my graphics card installed. It's a popular card, I'm sure it works. And sadly this is day 3 of me trying to figure it out.

FYI - I installed both the official Nvidia driver on their web site (64 bit) and it was fine. I also installed the driver via Envy and it was also fine. Fine in the sense of... everything (except compiz) worked as normal. But like I said, compiz just isn't sticking on the "custom" setting. So it's at the point where I'm starting to think that it's a compiz related problem and not really related to my graphics card.

Maybe I forgot to install something with compiz. I thought all I needed was simple-ccsm and advanced manager?

Update - Same issue is happening in Intrepid Beta 8.10 64 bit. I have the 177 Nvidia drivers installed. Hmmm...

Sorry - I'd edit my previous post but each time I run into a new piece of info that I *hope* will be recognized by somebody else here, the option for me to edit has expired.

Anyway, another update... I just spoke to somebody on the UbuntuForums who is running the exact same graphics card as me and a dual monitor setup on 32 bit Hardy. He explained it to be "unusually easy" to get running. And his 3d settings work fine.

He told me he doubts it's a 32 bit/64 bit issue, but nonetheless... his is working in 32 bit land. *shrug*
