With the exception of slackware and maybe a couple of others, you would be hard pressed to find a nix that doesn't have a 64 bit version. Good ones include opensuse and Ubuntu (not my cup of tea but a lot of people like it).

Whats your *nix experience?

Ubuntu is exactly like windows. OpenSuSu requires a bit more i believe... but never used it.

Your best bet would be Ubuntu, PCLinuxOS or even PC-BSD. the latter of the 3 is more Unix based but it has the KDE interface which is almost like a exact clone of XP.

I have personally used all 3, and you know what type of Windows person i am, and of all i would use PC-BSD if it had better support for my hardware. PCLinuxOS is a great Distro as well. Another KDE based Distro it is easy to use and is easy to work with.

Ubuntu is the XP of the Linux world as everyone trying to escape Windows flocked there. Simple to use and uses the Gnome interface.

Ubuntu would be the easiest to get support with. PCLinuxOS i had few issues with. PC-BSD Saxon knows very well.

I've ran 64 bit Ubuntu for the last few years with no issues at all. In fact, Ubuntu Linux is the only 64 bit version of ANY operating system (including XP 64 and Vista 64) I've had that's actually supported all of my hardware.

I do recommend you don't base your opinion of Linux on the opensuse flavor of Linux. I've tried it several times and each time I find myself disliking it more and more. If it works for you, by all means use it. But I didn't have comparable experiences in suse as I did with Ubuntu.

As Mak said, Ubuntu is popular due to how easy it is to use. Yes, it is Linux, so don't expect a start button or the ability to run .exe's, but I find it to be an extremely user friendly distro while still offering high end features to keep most tech-heads happy.

Another +1 for Ubuntu is the forums. They have a huge forum base with a truckload of traffic that comes through. Many posters are actual developers for Ubuntu, so a good chunk of them spend a lot of time daily posting answers and helping users.

I was very unimpressed by PC BSD. I think openSUSE recieved a lot of criticism from the linux community because of novell's involvement with microsoft but IMO it's a decent, stable OS which looks good and has easy administration with or without GUI. Both ubuntu and opensuse have good hardware compatibility as far as I've seen.
