Question for someone who works for Geek Squad

For the people that read my thread about no jobs in the IT field, I got the job at Best Buy! Thanks for your help and support.

On to the question, I was interviewed by a retail manager and a Geek Squad manager. Basically, I was told everyone who works for Geek Squad starts out on the floor. Is this true? Or are they just telling me that in hopes of keeping me to fill a position that no one wants? I'm good in retail, sales, and customer service but I don't enjoy it. I told myself after working in CompUSA I wouldn't do retail anymore, but if I do this temporarily for them to view my performance then im ok with that. The General Manager walked in half way through the interview and we talked alot, had me give him an example of how I would throw a sales pitch, and said to be there in Friday at 1. So im assuming that im hired, and if I am, im hoping it's for Geek Squad and not on the sales floor. Since I was desperate I did apply for both Geek Squad and Sales but I think I did a great job in the interview and answered all the Geek Squad managers questions about Computers with ease. I think he might have been impressed but not sure. Give me your impressions guys! Thanks!

That's funny, I was just looking at an add for Geek Squad on careerbuilder.com and was going to post here and see if anyone worked there.

I'm very curious to find out about how this job goes for you. I refuse to work retail and am curuious about this rule they have about everyone starting on the floor.

I tried to get a job at geek squad, but somebody else got the job because he was a friend of the manager's son. Everybody else almost is pulled from the floor.

So rather than hire someone with credentials, they hire someone from the floor that knows how to sell a tv but may not even know how to replace a stick of RAM?

Yes, thats the way they said it. They even admitted that the guys they hired would need extensive technological training, and that I was much better than them in my techical knowledge, but they would rather have somebody who was more of a people person.

Well, they never even told me I was hired. The GM who came in and had me do a sales pitch at the end of the interview told me to come on Friday at 1. I'm assuming I am hired, but for Geek Squad I don't know. I'll definitly be asking alot of questions on Friday. More than likely though, they will put me where they need me the most. I'm just hoping they got the impression I want the Geek Squad position and they will try and get me in there.....Dude, im not even sure what the wage is. Ugh.... this is going to be a pain in the ***.

Yeah im convinced knowing the right people is actually better than your experience and skills. I've heard things like that so many times.

I work at best buy, and yes, usually they have you work on the floor before going into the Geek Squad. There are acceptions sometimes, but only if they are in real need of someone up there, and they have the sales experience. The reason for the required floor experiance is to get you familiar with Best Buys policies and specific sales techniques. It is also a geek squad agents reponsibility to go on the floor and actually help sell in the computer department at times when the bench is slow, or the floor needs help. This is why they ask to be on the floor first, to get you the basic experience.
And no, they don't give you a new VW bug just because you're on the geeksquad. You must be a double agent to get one (about 2 per store)
