Transitioning from Windows XP to Windows Vista, many users become easily fustrated about the constant security prompts generated by Windows Vista's User Account Control.

For some users, UAC prompts is so unbearable to the point where they decide to turn off UAC completely. While turning off UAC gets rid of the annoying UAC elevation prompts, this is at detriment to the range of security features which UAC offers.

Instead of turning off UAC, you can suppress elevation prompts while keeping UAC enabled, by tweaking an entry in the registry.

Better yet, you can download and use a free program called TweakUAC which will apply the registry tweak for you. Run the program, choose a setting, click OK, and the change is permanently made until you run and change it in TweakUAC again. Quite simply, TweakUAC is a standalone executable program where you can choose one of three UAC modes: Turn UAC off, Switch UAC to quiet mode, Turn UAC on. When quiet mode is enabled, UAC elevation prompts will no longer appear, and instead, elevation will be granted automatically for administrative tasks.

While arguably it's not as secure as having UAC turned on completely, it is more secure than turning UAC off, since applications will still run with limited non-admin privileges in standard user mode, Internet Explorer 7 will still run in protected mode, and file system and registry virtualization will still be enabled.

Instead of turning off UAC, suppress elevation prompts by applying the registry tweak manually, or by using TweakUAC.
