One of my clients received this error message in a legal vlk XP Pro laptop. to fix it I used Hijackthis delete on reboot to delete wgatray.exe and then replaced 2 files called legitcheckcontroll.dll and legitcheckcontrol.inf in system32, reboot and it worked

Yes those are the 2 files that WGA uses for it check. There is also a way to hack them and change them as well.

That's a lot more steps than what I used but if it works, it works.

It has worked several times for me before. It sucks when they update the WGA. But it will allow for WGA to be passed and you to download all necessary updates.
