| Monster Techie | I just bought a 40 gig ps3 that had no problems with its base configurations. I popped in a new 120 GB 7200.2 momentus hard drive, formatted it and apparently had no problems. The full size of the hard drive, about 111 gigs went into free space, and my games installed fine (although Devil May Cry 4 seemed to take longer but it might be my imagination or the fact that i was actually watching the installation bar this time) After playing devil may cry for 10 minutes I noticed that the load times were unstable. Sometimes when i went through doors there was virtually no loading at all, and other times it took considerably longer than i remembered from my 5400 rpm hard drive. Finally, during a load session (when i tried to upgrade my skills), the loading bar never ended and i had to force a reboot. I'm currently fully reformatting the hard drive, not quick format, and it has about 7 hours left. Could it be a bad hard drive, a faulty quick format and OS install the first time around, or what? A friend said games might be optimized for 5400 rpm hard drives and that could cause the loading instability, but every source i've read says that at worst, games perform equal to the base configuration. Does anyone have any insight or advice?

| i might have a tad of info for you the reason sony put a 5400 drive into the ps3 was because of the heat the 7200 drive's where pumping into the system i dont think it would be very much hotter but going along this line it could be causing a component inside to heat up to the point where it is causing problems the only thing i can think of suggesting is try it after the format then if it happens again take it back and see if you can get a 5400 drive into it

| Monster Techie | Well, i did a full format which took about 8 hours. It worked well and hasn't caused any problems yet. And you are right about the heat, but the 40 gig system generates less heat and uses less power than the previous models... so the very little extra heat that the 7200 rpm hard drive generates should really not be affecting anything for my version.

| ^ yes that's pretty much true it should have less heat i've had mine since a few days after release, its a 60gb version and its a uk one and every one knows its release date was pushed back over here, the reason being a overheating component that was frying but the load screen on DMC (the installing) takes a very long time and i've had the load screen (in game) be like that where it would take a few seconds for one to the other anyway how was upgrading your ps3 hdd, i'm just wondering because i fancy doing it

| Monster Techie | Upgrading was extremely simple, except nowadays you need to have a copy of the firmware on a flash drive in order to format the new hard drive. So far I'm extremely happy with my results.

| a platform shouldnt be plagued by any isues, you put the game in, it plays, that was supposed to be a good selling point, the more I read the more I get distressed, sounds like a pc nowadays. |
