Default Replacing ps3 motherboard

I have a 40gb ps3. If I replace the 40gb models motherboard with a 60 or 80gb motherboard, would that give me backwards compatibility? Is this even possible? I'm not worried about voiding my warranty so that isn't an issue.

why not just sale your 40gb and then buy a 60gb?
im sure buying a motherboard will be expensive, and it will be alot of work

You can get a cheap 20 gig ps3 on ebay. They are compatable with the older games, and you can just upgrade the hdd.

yeah it would be logical just to buy a 20gb or a 60gb version instead of messing about with changeing the motherboard and posible doing something wrong with it

see if you can take it into a local gamestop or EB (game in the uk) and trade it agenst a used 60gb version, i know its not new or anything but it will save you a lot of messing about and will knock a hefty sum off the other system
