Default ps2 swap disc/slide card combo

now i'm sure this topic has been done wayy too many times but i've been doing searches all over the internet to find the right answers w/ no luck...i'm in a hurry to find answers because i've got an imported game that should be arriving at my house any day now and i wanna be able to play my game right away ha.

soo anyways...i ordered and received the swapdiscs/slidecard combo.

it came w/ a CD swap disc and a DVD swap disc...

- is the CD swap disc for games? and DVD swap disc for dvds? the game that i ordered is a japanese import video game...should i use the CD swap disc for this?

- what's the difference between the normal, pal, and ntsc modes? should i use the normal mode for my japanese import game?

i tried testing this stuff out just to make sure it works...i tried playing a DVD-R and it wouldn't play...and i tried it on a regular US game just to see if it would boot it...it didn't work.

- i've read that older ps2 consoles might not play DVD-R's even w/ the swap disc...is this true? because the website said that this swapdisc/slidecard combo will allow you to play DVD-R burns...but i've had my ps2 for a few years now soo i'm thinking this combo will only play DVD-R's if i had a newer ps2 model.

- should i be able to boot a regular US game just to make sure this booting system works? or does this combo just work for import games strictly and won't work if i try to boot a US game?

any help would be greatly appreciated..thanks in advance
