PS2 Modchip question

Can someone please give me some insight into the modchip for Playstation 2 consoles ?

I have someone here who's willing to sell me a used PS2 console (Model: SPCH-50001) with memory stick for $108 (CAN) but want to upgrade the unit with a modchip. What modchip can i purchase and is it good for all current backups and future ones on the PS2 ? Is there anything important i should be aware of before considering a modchip?

$108 for a used ps2? no way!!!

i have seen them brand new for $120 latley with more stuff then that.

there are lots of mods for lots of ps2 types.
