i heard that a mod chip can ruin ur ps2....any truth to this?

Yes - a Mod Chip can royally eff your systemup if you don't know what youre doing. There's a lot of soldering really really really really really really really tiny wires, and they're all over the board. It's easiest to mod an xbox.
