| True Techie | as far as mods both systems take it max, i saw a xbox online at some modders site that had a new faster processor, he uppd the harddrive 3x size, added divx playing, win media, all this other junk, it was nice, ps2 has the same mod capabilities.. if sony wouldn't have rushed their system out for the holidays it would be a lot better..

| Newb Techie | The HDD for use with PS2 games was released in Japan in July of 2001 or so. I imported one last year to play FFXI and I have a few other imports that support the HDD. I made a guide for the software that comes with it that replaces the Browser. Here it is: http://www.sscorpio.com/~bungiefan/ I really need to update it to cover the additions that were made with version 0.30, but I've been busy with work and Japanese classes to take more screenshots and write more of the guide. The one thing keeping you from using your own hard drive with the PS2 is that Sony customizes the BIOS of their HDD units and their HDD software looks for that customization. So far, I've seen Maxtor DiamondMaxes, IBM DeskStars, and Maxtor Fireball 3s used as Sony HDD units that other importers obtained. I've also heard rumor that some peoples' HDDs are Seagates. Mine is a Maxtor DiamondMax. Sony uses 40 gigabyte, 5400 RPM, IDE hard drives as their HDD units. Linux doesn't look for the custom BIOS, but games do. So with a Linux Kit you can swap in your own hard drive, but with PSBBN or the HDD utility disc, you have to use an official HDD until someone figures out how to patch the BIOS on a store-bought hard drive to match Sony's custom BIOS. |

| Newb Techie | lol bungiefan, you always beat me to the HDD replying!! :P i have one of those Quantum fireballs that bungie mensioned... don't get one if you don't have a japanese ps2, believe me, i paid $235 for mine, and it wont work in my asian ps2 because sony put protection on it and it can't be cracked, so i can't boot the hdd upgrades, but mearly speed up loading times... |
