You can update, it should be around version 4.x or something. There are ways of installing the homebrew channel on 4.0+, so that's not an issue. Before it, you had to use the "Twilight Hack", which has been retired now.
My suggestion is check the legality, but if I'm not mistaken, getting it to play DVDs isn't a problem. Do a little research and you should find all the info you need.
