| My and my friend took apart and non working xbox and i can get the hd can they be formatted for windows? i just want to put linux on it i dont want to use one of my larger drives for linux. so if the drive can be formated that would be cool ![]()

| yes they can but the thing is on a standard xbox the hdd is "locked". the hdd either needs to be "unlocked" by the xbox for you to destroy the lock and then reformat or you need to know the key to the lock and there is a program to unlock it in a pc. in other words the unless you know the code or you can get the xbox to function enough to do a "hotswap" to unlock the hdd for the pc you are SOL. i heard of a program that can break the lock so maybe you should look into that. p.s. when the lock is in place read/write access is blocked so it must be circumvented if you are to get anywhere
