If you want to play people across the internet but dont feel like paying, get a tunnel. You plug your console into your home network to play system link games across the internet. Halo 2 works really well; lots of people playing it, and only slight lag sometimes. This one works wonders: http://www.teamxlink.co.uk Also is compatible with Nintendo DS, Gamecube, PS2, and PSP.

There are more tunnels out there, like Gamespy, but it sucks to set up from behind a firewall. I tried and gave up. Let me know how it goes.
