Default Modding my Xbox 360 without a mod chip

Well out of bordom, I figured I would take my $300 investment apart to try and mod it without a mod chip. Apparently all you need to do is take your xbox apart and flash the dvd-rom drive and you can play games you burn. I started with taking it apart to get to the dvd drive and realized how ****** the cooling is for such a beastly console. I am going to try and custom mount some form of a aftermarket pc cooler and butcher my xbox case to get it to fit. Tonight when I get home from work I will give the firmware a try and hope to see if a burned copy of halo 3 will work. If all goes well I am going to get a membership for blockbuster or hollywood video.

The downsides to this is if this will even work, whats going to happen on xbox live, the cost of frickin' dual layer dvds. Luckly my dads got me covered for 25 dual layer dvds which is mighty nice of him. Boy I cant wait!

I've read that you'll be banned from Live, if your Xbox is modded. I'm not sure about modding w/o a mod chip, if they can detect something else, that's been changed.

Modding an XB will void its warranty and kill the XB Live ability from the XB. You could so a software system reflash.

you can't get on xbox live if your running a modded or cracked xbox, if its not updated, you can't connect to xbox live either so its a no go for online play (3/4 of the point of the 360 imo)

usually you can mod consoles near their early release os', updates generally fix all the patch holes since M$ monitors modding sites as well

I was once very affixed with the PSP modding community, flashing custom firmwares, using memory stick swaps, homebrew etc.

i play online on halo 3 that is burnt and have yet to be banned but yes there is a chance you will get banned.
also you dont need a mod chip to mod your 360 the firmware way is alot simpler and can be done for free lol
