Got a cool custom modded Xbox 360? I suggest staying far away from Xbox Live unless you want to see the message below: [H]ard|OCP

It is possible to modify the firmware of the Xbox 360 drive to be able to play backups which of course includes pirated games. There has been no official confirmation from Microsoft about this issue but the frequency of the posts can only lead to the conclusion that Microsoft is actually banning Xbox 360 systems with modded firmwares.
Most users are suddenly experiencing a disconnect from Xbox Live with the inability to reconnect. A test results in the following status codes:
w: 0000 - 0021
x: 0000 - f001
y: 00a8 - 6820
z: 8015 - 1900
It seems that Microsoft is not banning the gamertag but the machine code of the system. Some users report that Xbox 360 users without a modded firmware got banned as well. It remains to be seen if we can get a official statement from Microsoft about the occurrences. A good way to receive all the latest information is the original thread in the Xbox Scene Forum.

The device turns on and off depending whether or not the disc is legit. It's all pointless though. back ups mean no xbl multiplayer action, which is where many games truely shine.

Microsoft has started banning modified Xbox 360 consoles from its online Xbox Live service. The company has announced "a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to modded consoles connecting to Live".
Users attempting to connect to the online service with a banned console receive an error message with the status code Z: 8015 - 190D.
Gamers modify consoles for a variety of reasons, very few of them with legitimate intentions.
The most common use is to allow the playing of copied games, usually pirated versions, although some argue that the ability to copy games allows them to use backup versions and keep the original version stored safely elsewhere.
People also modify consoles to allow the running of other operating systems and applications or to circumvent cheat prevention systems. Microsoft is not banning the users' accounts, but rather the systems themselves. Users will not be automatically banned from Live, but will no longer be able to access the service from the modified console.
The move is to help prevent "inappropriate behaviour like hacking or cheating ", according to Microsoft. The company will "continue to enforce this rule to ensure the integrity of the service and protect our partners and users".
The announcement has prompted a huge response with hundreds of replies on the official Xbox Live blog.
Most of the comments praise the move but there are several people claiming that their genuine unmodded consoles have been banned.
Other commentators have pointed out the potential problem of sites such as eBay being flooded with consoles that have been banned or people deliberately overheating their banned consoles in order to get a replacement under warranty.
| At least they are announcing it this time. I remember when Halo 2 came out, the game would scan your XBox for mods and then disable X-Box from using the Xbox Live Account if it detects a mod in use.
It would not suprise me if they do that sneaky trick again with Halo 3.
Plus I remember some one telling me that they MS did some thing to the motherboard that stops people from using solder.
