It is supposed to keep your xbox from catching on fire, but I have read things that say that the power cord is not the problem, like this:

On all 1.0 or 1.1 Xboxes there is a faulty soldering job right at the spot where you plug in the power cord. This causes a spark whenever you plug in the power cord. On rare cases the power supply will burn up, which is what the new power cord is suppose to prevent.

The thing is Microsoft isn’t bothering calling a recall on the actual problem. They give you this advanced power cord which will prevent the spark from getting outside the box, but your Xbox will still fry. Great job Microsoft. Take the easy way out.
