It is supposed to keep your xbox from catching on fire, but I have read things that say that the power cord is not the problem, like this:

The thing is Microsoft isnât bothering calling a recall on the actual problem. They give you this advanced power cord which will prevent the spark from getting outside the box, but your Xbox will still fry. Great job Microsoft. Take the easy way out.
