Default Fixing a broken Xbox 360 DVD drive.

My friend got a 360 with HDD for $40 from a guy he works with because it can't read xbox 360 disks. He got it and now were going to fix it up and sell it to a friend who is too cheap to buy a 360 new or used. I cleaned the lense with rubbing alcohol and it still does not work. What should I do?

BTW it is a samsung drive.

Looks like it's the Samsung TS-H943A. Looks to be around $25-35.

My friend is going to order the drive tonight. I have done some reading up on it and it appears I have to back up the firmware on the old drive and then flash the new drive with that firmware. How would I go about doing that?

You might as well mod the drive to play backups if your trying to flash the drives bios. There are tutorials for doing so . You will wind up needing a SATA wire to do so...

Even if you dont really want to flash the firmware to play backups its still the same process.

Yeah its gonna get complicated. Heres a link to a modding tutorial.

So the drive game in today and both have almost the same numbers and such accept for the last 2 numbers, the broken one is 016, the the new one is 019. I hooked the old drive up to my computer using a SATA cable with the 360 as power but when I open up the firmware tool it doesn't see the drive. Would it be possible just to take the laser out of the new one and put in the the old one without it bricking my 360? it would be the same board just a different laser. (or just take the board from the old one and put it in the new one?)

Sorry for double posting but I cannot edit my previous post.

For future reference if you take the board out of the old drive and put it into the new drive your 360 will work and wont be bricked. That's what I did and it works perfectly

Speaking from some 360 drive repairs I have done, before you swap the laser, try switching the circuit board on the old drive to the new drive. As odd as this sounds I have had it fix such issues more than once in the past.
