Default Broken Xbox

2 days ago, my xbox quit working. Before it stopped working, it was very very loud, and i couldnt understand why. Also, if i closed the disc drive it would make a nasty grinding sound. Anywho, now, it will boot to the xbox screen with the big x, then freeze and it will go into overheat mode with an orange ring around the eject button. So, i can play game on it whatsoever. Any insight on why its doing this, and, is it salvagable?

O yeah, i bought it from a friend and he didnt tell me that he had opened it up, so it isnt under warranty, and as far as i can tell that he didnt mess it up.....

thanks!!!

Replace your HD. You said your DVD works and it sounds like an HD problem.

It is possible the rear fan was failing and then finaly failed, which would explain the noise....

i would say if your friend is a noob and he opened it, he may have been curious enough to lift the heatsinks and have a look. if the heatsinks have been lifted the thermal paste has to be removed and another paste reapplied.
