Default How Would CSS Run On This..

Ok well my friend is getting a new PC for Christmas. But for now he has to stick with his 4 year old comp:

1.6 Ghz P4 400Mhz FSB 256K L2
768MB PC2100 RAM
ATI Radeon 9550 250/200

How would it run? Even on low would it be ok?

He doesn't want the eye candy, just wants to play it ok.

I doubt it will be fine. I know my 1.7GHZ Intel with 512 MB 800mhz RD RAM with a 9200 had processor problems going thru HL2 defiantly.

Can you overclock that machinne?

I don't think it needs to be overclocked. The requirements for HL2 are:

Minimum:
1.2Ghz processor
256Mb of RAM
DirectX 7-capable graphics card

Recommended:
2.4Ghz processor
512Mb of RAM
DirectX 9-capable graphics card

CS Source has similar requirements. You see he has more than enough RAM, and the specs are above the minimum. Therefore it should run alright at low settings.

It runs like crap on minimum, expisally with a crappy processor. The pysics calculations eat up soo much CPU

30 FPS is a little low. And he told me with specs posted above that he is getting around 50-60 FPS on 800x600 on low, so I guess we can play now

Ok well my friend is considering getting this video card:

9600XT 256MB AGP 4x/8x
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102335

Or...

9600XT 128MB AGP 4x/8x
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814125124

Few questions:

1. Is it really worth $10 extra to get the 256MB? I think it is...

2. Is the difference between 4x/8x minimal or huge?

3. How well of FPS will it get on HL2/CSS on medium to high at 800x600 with 1.6 Ghz P4 and 768MB RAM?

4. Last question, he has a 250W PSU that powers what I listed and then a 60GB HD and 1 IDE drive, would the 9600XT have enough power?

Thanks!

If you have any other cards to recommend, list it please. He wants to stay below $100
