I have searched for many free online games....a good one was Project entropia, but it is sooooooooooooo hard to play unless you donate money. I know you said dont say runescape, but I think it is the best free online rpg on the web right now. Also you may dislike runescape because of the older engine it used to use that gave it a 3-d background and 2d characters, but they made a new engine that has very impressive 3-d graphics for being made on java, and the best part is that it is browser bases, so you dont have to download anything, and it plays extremely well on dial up. So if you haven't given it much of a chance, I think you should just get on it for awhile and give it a chance, I thought the game was really bad before I played it, but my friends played so I gave it a try and I loved it.

If you want to take the trouble, you can find free (private) servers for some of the retail MMOs. I found a couple for Lineage II. I'm not sure of the legality, however. I would assume as long as the hosts don't make money off it...
