Error when trying to start COD4 multiplayer

I get an error message when I try to start the COD4 multiplayer. First it refers to the previous attempt asking if I want to run it in safe mode and regardless of what I click it goes to a low resolution black screen with the circular "busy" symbol for vista and then the black window goes away and another window pops up saying "iw3mp.exe has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you..."

My boss at work said that it might be a problem with my punkbuster. I've never successfully gotten COD4 multiplayer to work, and although I'm not a heavy gamer I would like to get into it a little more, much less be able to play the multiplayer. Any ideas/suggestions?
