It was dark for atmosphere. There was a small mod you could download that attached the light to some of your guns, tho. Made everything a lot easier. But switching between gun and light was supposed to add to the whole terror aspect of the game.

I agree and hope they go the Quake 4 route of letting you use your flashlight and your gun at the same time. I understand dark because of atmosphere however.
