| Why the **** is my cpu temperature so erratic!!! Sometimes when my computer is idle it is running at 48+ C, put at other times it runs at 28C, whats that all about?? My CPU FAN is running at about 2500 RPM this seems quite low, cos on my other PC it ran at about 5000+ rpm, is my FAN hammered or something?? What do you guys think?? Thanks Oh by the way, at what temperature will my CPU get damaged? This is really affected my gaming as it sometimes reaches temps of up to 67 C!! Killer

| It sounds like your motherboard is perhaps reading your temps incorrectly. I would recommend getting a BIOS update to solve this - ABIT motherboards are renouned for reading the CPU temperature higher than what it actually is. Regarding the temps at which your CPU gets damaged it depends on what CPU you have. I see from your sig. you have an AMD. These can usually withstand quite high temps but the lower the better. 67 degrees C does seem a bit high so you might want to consider checking your heatsink and making sure it is making good contact with your cpu for better heat dissapation. Also check your layer of thermal paste and make sure it is evenly spread out - if you are using a thermal pad, remove it and use some thermal paste. This should allow the heat to transfer from the cpu to the heatsink more efficiently and thus resulting in lower temperatures. Your fan may be running at a lower speed due to a problem with a power supply, or it could just be broken. Hope this info helps, Retro.

| My cpu fan runs between 2500-2600rpm so i wouldnt worry bout that. As for ur cpu, 67c stressed is high, wont kill ur cpu but may shorten its life abit. Mine was going to 65c after monster sessions on Doom3, Farcry etc but adding a small case fan (didnt have one originally) has brought it down to 60c tops. Ur idle temp of 48c is fine, but i would think the temp sensor isnt reading correctly cos i doubt it would ever go as low as 28c. There is a way to reset the sensor but i'm not sure of the procedure so maybe someone else can help? |

| Yeah i think u maybe right about ABit having crap readings regarding temp. It was reading 49C whilst idle, so i reset my comp and now it is reading 22C whislst idle VERY CONFUSING!!!!
