"Can't Create D3D Device"

I've been having trouble with my laptop for a while; It won't let me play any games. I've tried re-installing DirectX 9.0 and 8.1; That doesn't fix the problem. I've also tried downloading newer drivers for my display adapter, and that didn't help (mainly because there isn't a new one...).

It says "Can't create D3D Device. Please, check DirectX or display adapters".

If there are any other possible solutions I haven't tried, or if I might not have installed DirectX correctly (When I opened the EXE, it spouted a bunch of .zip files, and then all I did was open the DXSETUP.exe; Should I have done something else with the zip files?), please tell me.

what graphics chip does your laptop have and what games are you having trouble with?

also have you tried reinstalling the latest drivers for your graphics device?
