Default Windows speaker problems

I have 2 speakers on either side of my monitor if I go into the control panel and change the speaker settings for 2 speakers neither speaker makes noise. It seems that the only way to make the speakers work is to change the speaker settings to 5.1 surround sound which results in the left speaker being much louder than the right. Why won't the speakers work on the correct settings? I have tried different speakers and had the same results so it not the speakers. Any help is appreciated.

You need to be sure to have the right input (as EricB said, it's usually Green). If it's not green (I've seen this on two different motherboards), the manual for your motherboard/sound card should say...or you could be lazy and try each one until it works as desired.

Hmm, the only other thing that seems possible is that you have software for your sound card that's changing it? Did you try each hole, as I think most require to be set on one of them? o.O
