If you are using firefox (v2, don't remember if v1.5 worked the same way). Just click on Tools > Options > Content Tab > and on the file types section, click on manage.

You might be able to configure IE in a similar way.

Many sites these days will ask which program you prefer. Most of the time the choices include Windows Media Player, RealPlayer, and QuickTime.
