actually there are a few places that have free movies that ARE legal to download

archive.org is one of those places

A soemwhat related question concerning legality:
Is it illegal to download TV shows? After all, tapeing 'em isnt illegal, so why should downloading them be?

good question, not for certain, I dont think its illegal provided the show is available over broadcast networks not exclusive to pay tv or cable

The laws are a little goofy in my opinion, for example its ok for me to goto my local library and check out a dvd for free, but illegal to download same..........

I think checking out a DVD from the library is more like borrowing one from a friend, since you return it.
I think downloading shows should be okay, though. It's like taping songs off the radio. Usually you can download a single legally from a legitimate site. It's like advetising for the album.

Actually here in the UK it's illegal to record from the TV or radio.
