Default VGA to S-Video

I'd like to hook my laptop up to my TV... the laptop has VGA or SVGA... whatever standard CRT monitors hook up to (not the new DVI), and the TV has component video, RCA video, and S-video in. Looks like I can go either way (RCA or S-Video) with this...

http://www.pccables.com/70717.htm

and then there are the $200 scan converters. Can I do it with just a wire, or can only those converters do it? My computer had S-video out, but I sold it and now I just have the laptop until I build the new one

I know for my computer I'm sending the video to the tv via s-vid.. but I had to buy a graphics card with s-video out to be able to do it. maybe something like the cable in that url would be a quick fix? not sure though...

What?

If you have a movie on your computer -- this could be a DVD, or it could be a downloaded Divx or Xvid AVI movie, or a Real, Quicktime, or Windows Media clip -- you could hook it up to the TV and essentially use the TV as a monitor... If you have the proper connections.

This is really ****y... Pardon my French... But 15 years ago my father had a Commodore-Amiga system, pre-CD days, and he had it hooked up to his television. He could work off the TV! (Amiga used a low resolution system that looked fine on TV.) Additionally, his Amiga 15" monitor had RCA in so one could hook a VCR or Nintendo up to it as well. That monitor rocked, no two ways about it. If new monitors included Svideo and RCA in, a LOT of problems would be solved. For example one could play Xbox or Playstation(2) on the same screen as their computer, with a little hardwired switch between the two inputs.
