Default Surround Sound on the Cheap

Alright, before I invest the $25 odd into a soldering iron and wire, I want to know if this will even work.

I have a set of Logitech X-230 speakers (2.1) that work excellently, but I'm kinda looking to experience full surround sound. The CircuitCity near me has a set of X-540s on sale for about $45 after rebates, but that's a bit more than I'd like to spend.

No, I'm not an audiophile, before anyone asks about quality.

I have a few older sets of speakers from yard sales and old computers lying around - two of which are relatively good 2-channel speakers.

If I were to hook up a set of the 2-channel speakers to the center channel and rear channel, and then hook the X-230s up to the side channel, would I get a decent enough surround sound system? I'd be plugging it into a computer with discrete outputs (six different headphone jacks on the back), so splitting sound isn't a problem.
Or would I get better results by hooking the 2-channels to the side and the X-230s in the center?
Or am I even crazy for asking such a thing?

Windows 7 is looking to be great - if M$ doesn't screw it up!
