speaker problems

alright. here it goes.
i am running windows xp pro. i was trying to run an old computer game from the early 90s (doom) which runs in msdos. i somehow managed to mess up the sound on my computer. the speakers work. the volume knob on top of them does nothing, but the volume knob on my keyboard works.
everything is plugged in right.

i dont know very much about computers, so, if anybody can tell me how to fix it, please go step by step
