Default soundmax issue

I recently built a computer with:

mobo: A8N-VM CSM
processor: amd 64 3500+
winxp pro

I initially used the drivers on the mobo driver cd, then eventually I started getting the following problem when playing mp3's with winamp, windows media player, etc.. It also happens with video sound playback.

Problem:

Sound plays fine, but randomly cracks and pops and stutters. If I start multitasking, it gets really bad and the sound degradation is horrible.

My first solution was to go to asus.com and download the updated driver package for soundmax (SoundMax AD1986A Audio WHQL Driver V5.10.01.4151 for Windows 2000/XP.), problem did not go away. Tried using the microsoft driver, got worse.

I even performed a clean install and the problem still exists. I have no idea what the deal is. All of my software and hardware are set up properly from my point of view.

Any insight would be useful.

thanks in advance for your help guys.

Does this happen when you play files other than mp3?

Has this been happening all the time since you first used the computer?

Yes it happens when any sound is playing and has been happening ever since I started using it. No raid setup.
