Default Sound stopped working

I'm running Windows Vista. A few minutes ago I went into Control Panel - Programs - Change Startup Programs, and decided to stop a few programs that started up whenever I turn on my computer. I think I accidentally closed something I need for audio because now I get no sound. There is no Red box indicating that it is off and I have toggled it on and off repeatedly. I've tested it in multiple programs so I know its something with the audio and not a particular program. I clicked on Volume Mixer and I get a green sound indicator going up and down under Device - Speakers, but nothing under Applications - Windows Sounds which is where (I believe, though not certain) the sound was coming from before.

any ideas?

restart the programs that you stopped. Next time stop programs one at a time and search google for the program to see what it does and if you need it. You can also use a restore point prior to removing startup programs as well.

I'll try. I can't remember every program I stopped, they were mostly ones I didn't use any more, or so I thought.

eh, I don't think I'll bother going that far with it. This is just my backup anyways and I'm getting to reformat. So it's not worth it, but I thought I'd check and see if anyone happened to know what the startup program is that makes the sound work. thanks anyways

I'm not sure how to find that info. I've got a Dell Inspiron 1721 running vista. I haven't made any hardware changes to it.

It is a SigmaTel Audio.
The startup file needed is: stacsv.exe
