Default sound problem w/ xp

Hi, I don't know much about computers so plz help me out.
My bro put together a pc for me;it's a pentium 4 w/ xp pro. I have soundblaster live! and ATI graphic card (radeon 9200?). For some reason, there's no sound. When I play like a song, it would appear to be playing, but I would hear nothing. Under my sound and video game controllers I got a whole bunch of different devices like legacy, creative sb live, nvidia nforce and winfast tv2000 wdm etc.. Could they be in conflict with one another?(there's no yellow ! though).
I was told to try the onboard sound, but I don't know how. Please hellp me out.

Go through your BIOS (usaully Del at startup) and disable your onboard sound first.

If that doesn't work, open the SB Live! sound mixer console and make sure that nothing is muted or turned all the way down.

Thank you for your reply, but the sound isn't turned down or muted. Now I tried to find the onboard sound in BIOS but I don't know which one it is. I know the name may vary pc to pc, but can anyone give me a clue as to what word it should contain and under which catagory?

Do you speakers have their own volume control? A friend of mine had the same problem recently and bought new ones that did.

It should be under Integrated Peripherals and most of the time they're on by default.
