Default sound dampening material

Does anybody know whats a good cheap alternative for sound dampening material? Im into recording and im trying to get the best sound quality possible, so im trying to make like a sound dampening booth in my room (a finished garage). Its not going to be the entire room, im gonna build some kind of small area, maybe use plywood or curtains or something. I just need something that will stop sound from bouncing, because sometime that because a problem, especially when recording guitar and bass amps. I was thinking lining the walls with those bed egg crate things you get at wallmart for $10, or maybe styra-foam. Anybody know more about this or have any suggestions?

well, you can use egg cartons (ugly), curtains(hot), or sound proof material (expensive).

other than that, there's not much else you can do unless yu lay the cash. sorry...
