or just use a digital out and use an external DAC and amp. That's the best way for audiophile quality. It's what my next setup will be, although I am going to build both the DAC and headphone amp

Turtle beach?

How about you get ahold of a real soundcard, so you can make a true comparison. Get an Auzentech prelude X-FI in your machine, and you wont think twice about onboard vs dedicated.

You can even get an X-FI Xtrememusic off woot for $37 shipped. You just need to check everyday, theres been one up the past two woot offs if i remember.

The guy who told you that new integrated chipsets contain the same circuity and chips as dedicated is an idiot, and knows nothing about audio. If that was true, there would be no need for dedicated sound cards anymore.

With onboard you dont get hardware accelerated effects, you get software emulated instead. And you also get distortion, and limited inputs/outputs.

Do you know what the purpose of all the capacitors and everything you see on a dedicated soundcard is?

Its to feed clean, filtered and stable power reducing in better quality sound with no static, low floor noise, and no distortion.
You also get more inputs/outputs, and lower latency (necessary for recording) as well as less interference due to not being placed
on the same circuitry as the motherboard, and offloaded cpu usage and dedicated ram for the audio.

Nowhere near as good, its still software emulated as well.

Because I need a sound card that works with Ubuntu.

A real sound card? Man... you can dog on Turtle Beach all that you want, it makes no difference to me. I can't imagine having sound much better than what I got with my current speakers. I'm blown away by the capability this thing has given me.

Granted, I've got a slight bottleneck - Needs to be Linux compatible. And with Ubuntu, Turtle Beach is supported 100% out of the box.

It's a win/win for me. Anything else just doesn't make sense.

No offense, just saying that theres way better stuff out there.

Im just saying by my experience with audio. Now in your situation, youre pretty much stuck but yes the higher end cards along with good speakers/headphones will provide way better results.

Um, what?

I searched forums, this one included, and TB was always in the top 3 when it came to best cards under 50 bucks...

Theyre not really that good, best cards would be X-FI cards
or pro audio recording cards.

Good to know I can trust this place as a reliable resource for future considerations of hardware upgrades. ....

I have to ask, what cards would be "pro audio recording" for less than 50 bucks?

Completely ignore Creative, seeing as though they absolutely suck in the Linux world.
