Default SERIOUS avi file lag? any suggestions for older codecs?

Okay, I remembered what my other thread was supposed to be about.

some movies that I own, I like to download and edit, to save me the endless hours of DVD ripping (protip: it's not illegal if you own the movies, before I see that the first post is a rant of me breaking the law. I'm not). but when I just view the movies, they run in fullscreen at about 5fps. and sometimes they will just not continue. the audio will, oh yeah. but the video just freezes. and then sometimes the audio gets up to ten seconds behind the video.

I'm pretty sure what i need is an older codec, but I can't find any. any searches that i look for lead me straight to high-end codecs. codecs for 1080p and such. is there any codecs you know of that will work on an old piece of junk with an nvidia GEF 5200?

DivX? The video card has nothing to do with it. I've watched videos with way worse than that.

I use SMPlayer (uses the MPlayer engine, and adds a GUI)
It can render the video through DirectX or OpenGL, which will use your video card rather than just the CPU.

A *nix based program being ported to Windows. No wonder it's better than WMP.
