Question Recording Format Questions

I have always made CD's using the format of the software that comes up when you launch the software. Be it CD creator or Nero. I'm using Nero 5 now as that's what came with my burner and CD Creator does not recognize it.
Anyway, my step-son is making CD's using the "data" format instead of the "normal" audio format. They play on his car CD player just fine or one that is MP3 compatible. He is able to get hundreds of songs on a CD instead of the usual amount using the audio type. Now all that said, would someone explain to me the recording differences or direct me to a link where I can read up on this. I would like to know as well as the fact of my kids knowing more about this stuff than I do
Thanks in advance.

well mp3 files are compressed audio. a music file compacted to save space, while still maintaining the integrity of it. the music that plays on normal cds, well i dont know if there is a name for the files, but the files are much larger for some reason, so you can only fit around 80 minutes onto one cd. nowadays, there are cd players that can recognize the mp3 format similar to the way winamp plays them so you can just burn the mp3s onto a cd and have tons of music on one cd. but normal cd players do not recognize this format. sometimes i get a little long winded and erratic with my explanations but i hope you get the picture.

Thanks!
That explains alot. Do you know what option or format that the Nero software would call MP3? They have ISO and UDF, mode 1, mode 2/XA but no just plain MP3 or "data" to choose from.

I found whatIi was looking for in the HELP part of Nero. They call it DDCD
Thanks for your help too!
