Angry Problem ripping analog (vinyl or tape) to .wav

I am using a shareware product called RipVinyl to convert my old vinyl albums and audio tapes to .wav files with the aim to then burn them to CD. I have an analog stereo system inputting through my PC's soundcard (I am running a Dell Dimension XPS T450, PIII 450 MHZ - the HD is one of the newer Ultra ATA drives, OS is Win98se). I have no problems with the RipVinyl application. It's easy to use. The problem concerns the output .wav files. Regardless of type, or length each recording is interrupted by a "beeping" tone of some kind or clipping sound. I am stumped as to what is causing this. When I convert digital media, e.g. music off of a CD, to MP3 on store it on the HD I get none of this beeping and clipping. Any thoughts?

I have some sample files I could send out, but it seems I can't post them to the forum.

Many thanks in advance for replies.

Does it only happen to vinyl recordings or tape as well? Check the output of your record player, some of them require a pre-amp to send a proper signal. Secondly, have you defragmented your hard drive? Too much fragmentation can cause an interuption in the recording - hence the strange noises. Thirdly, have you tried different software - sometimes one works better than the other. I recommend Audiograbber. Good luck!

Daveppeters thanks for your reply!

To answer your questions:

The problem manifests itself regardless of the source media (vinyl or tape), although the manifestation (i.e. the strange sound) may be different. I have the tape deck and turntable connected to a graphic equalizer and receiver.

I thought that HD fragmentation could be an issue so I defragemented the original HD that came with the PC and still had the problem. I subsequently bought a new HD (Western Digital 40GB, 7200 RPM) last year and use that for storing the music .wav files...but I still have the problem.

To your last point, maybe I should try some different software. I also wondered whether it could be something in Windows that is causing the problem, but I have not been able to isolate it.

I remain stumped.
