| pondering what actually travels through an audio cable is it constant electrical or some form of electric modulation that is then interpretted by the speaker as to what volume and note the sound is

EricB is your man for this - he knows more about it than I. |

| Re: pondering I'll try my best, but eric will have to fill in the details.
Basically, there is always some signal being produced. Whether or not you can hear it all depends on the noise floor or SNR of your equipment. If you've ever listened to a speaker, you'll hear hissing. Thats noise. Its getting noise signal from the circuits in your amplifier, or is has noisy circuitry in the speaker itself, or the crossover network. Everything has a noise floor... the more equipment thats added, the higher the noise floor, and the louder the hissing.
Anyways, as for power, the wattage/voltage isn't constant. Your volume knob is basically a resistor (or was at some point in time back in the day). The higher the knob is, the lesser there is resistance. When the knob is all the way up, thats when there is no resistance and the amp is "wide-open".
Resistances/ohms are a whole other ball game and i'm not even going to get into it. Impedence plays a big part in how a system performs (as well as how long...haha).
Wasn't trying to "sound sophisticated"... I just can't explain it very well. |
