Question Playing DVD on computer

Can someone tell me why when I play some, not all, it shows what everyone is saying like in sub titles but sub titles are off. It's like a movie made for the hearing impaired. I use power dvd that came with the computer. Dell lat d620 with xp pro. If I change players to try to stop the sub titling the movie won't play with sound. Any ideas on this?

What other players have you tried? VLC/Quicktime/Windows Media Player?

It's been a while since I tore apart a .vob (dvd file) - the subtitles are a particular type of file built into the chapter information.

Usually, there are standardized info-tracks. Like 2 channel audio was usually... Track 1.1 or something like that... english subtitles would be track 2.5 .... keep in mind this is not verbatim how the DVD is put together, just vague recollection from my days ripping dvd's

Anyways, PowerDVD goes for the "Standard" tracks. Which some coots put strange things in the typically standard tracks. Your audio is not in the "expected" track for some players, and your subtitles aren't either.

More advanced players allow you to choose which tracks specifically are and aren't displayed.

VLC has an option for subtitles. If the subtitle is a part of the video itself it won't help, though.

Someteims the Subtitles are hard coded onto the movie themselves and you have to go in thru the DVD Menu Options to disable them. Even having them off via the program isnt enough cause it is hard coded to have them on the movie.
