Default new speakers

I'm looking for a new audio system for my laptop. It just has the onboard sound. I want as much umph and clear sound as I can get, but I don't know so much about speakers and such. What would you guys suggest?

You can get an Audigy 2 external soundcard for notebooks, and i donno i think a good set of speakers to go with it may be the logitech z-2300 2.1 THX.

How much money are you willing to spend? Is this for gaming or music?

mostly music and movies... light gaming like CoD and Guild Wars and such. Max of like $200 but hopefully less so I can get more than just speakers for x-mas.

Do those get very loud and maintain good sound? What about like a subwoofer too? These are much better than those like 5.1 systems Newegg has for like $100? I don't know much about audio.

those aren't going to get loud and have the same quality.

Look at the logitech X-530's or if you can find them cheap, z-5500. They have a good reputation and the specs are great as well. You don't need studio monitors for gaming... studio monitors aren't going to give you that same feeling. The low response on those monitors is not very good so its not going to give you that low end feeling you want in games. They also have a crazy impedance (5 ohms?!)... wattage isn't stated at all... juststay away. Would be excellent for listening to music or as B monitoring in a DAW, but gaming is out of the question.

If you're just looking for 2.1, then just browse around creative or logitech's systems. They are all pretty good.

I am looking for primarily music speakers. I would like them to be like uber loud and not distort, with good bass too. I want them to be able to absolutely p*** off my neighbors through concrete walls, lol. I don't which would be better, a 2.1 or higher.

2.1 would be best. Studio monitors are awesome, but they aren't meant to get loud at all

I retract my suggestion for Swan M200s. I thought you might actually be interested in some nice speakers, I guess I was wrong. I'm not going to suggest anything more at this point, as I can see you are already set on logitech speakers with a big X in the model name.

While studio monitors are not made to get very loud, they will most certainly be able to get uncomfortably loud without distorting. And you don't NEED a subwoofer with studio monitors. The reason you see them on pretty much all pc speakers is because the satellites are of so poor quality that they can not produce the lower frequency's properly (of course, neither does the subwoofer that usually comes with them, but that's another story) It's basically a marketing gimmick.
