Default New DVD-ROM won't play DVDs

My computer recognizes my anything that goes in my DVD-ROM as an audio CD. Anyone else ever had this problem?

Ok, Ive never had this problem before but from what info I can find online is this that it seems to be a common problem with some DVDROM drives reading CD-R(W)'s
If this is the case, does it actually read original DVD's?

If this is not the case and you cant actually read original DVD's either, then I would try these (if this were my problem)...

1 - Uninstall/Reinstall PowerDVD
2 - Upgrade/downgrade PowerDVD
3 - Try other Software
4 - Remove (from safe mode) the DVDROM drive (and all other previous DVDROM drives) from device manager, reboot and let windows detect it again.
5 - Did you install any DVDROM drivers that came with the drive when purchaced?.. I would let windows install generic drivers if you installed DVDROM drivers instead or else do the opposite.
6 - Update DVDROM drivers?
7 - (long shot) Check to see that some extension are not opening with the wrong program (ex - Open *.VOB with CDPLAYER.exe)
8 - Bump

Make sure that you have set a region code in your DVD-ROM drive. You'll do this in the Device Manager. If it has no region set PowerDVD wont let you play any movies.

Or... make sure to make your DVD-ROM regionfree with a firmware upgrade or installing the Region-Killer software which you'll easly mau find using a search enigne or the superb software from DVDIdle.com
