What is 7.1CH sound?

My new computer (see sig) has onboard Realtek 7.1CH audio with 6 jacks on the back. What are they all for? My speakers just have the green connector...I'm confused? I know one jack is for mic and for audio?

They're Altec Lansing 2.1 Speakers with Subwoofer, 31 watts. (Don't let the wattage fool you, they're really good sounding $100 speakers).

All i really need is the two jacks in the front (Mic and Audio)

What's with the other 6 jacks in the back? For a high performance speaker system?

Yes... most 5.1 system have either 3 cable connection AND/OR a digital connection.

NORMALLY, speakers are green, mic is pink/red and line-in is blue, but that depends on manufacturer. Look in the manual for your motherboard. If you don't have the manual, download one.
